- Massages can boost your mood. We all know happiness is an essential part of a healthy body and lifestyle.
- Massages can ease the posture pains from sitting.
- They can help to improve sleep too!
Basically a good massage can help put you back on a healthy path.
But they can be expensive… especially hemp-infused ones. Adding hemp to a massage oil is something everyone should try at least once. It truly will change the way to look at massages.
So if the idea of spending $40-$100 for a good hemp infused massage oil sounds out of your paygrade – never fear! We have spectacular CBD massage oil recipes using natural essential oils infused with hemp-derived CBD and hemp-infused carrier oils that will help melt away stress and especially, sore muscles and inflamed joints – and not break the bank!

Good pain relieving CBD massage oil recipes start with fast-acting, deep-penetrating carrier oils
Any pain or stress relieving CBD massage oil recipe MUST have a good carrier oil or carrier oil blend as its base. Each carrier oil has its own benefits and uses. Some like Jojoba, can help balance oily and dry skin while others like Hemp Seed Oil are better for balancing skin tone. Some oils are slower to absorb making them better for longer massages while others are quick to fully absorb. Which ones you choose are a matter of preference and skin need.
Which carrier oils are thinner, fast-absorbing and non-greasy?
Jojoba Oil is a non-greasy, fast absorbing oil. Jojoba oil is one of the best carrier oils to use because of its similar composition to sebum and ability to limit the amount of sebum our skin produces. Sebum overproduction is what clogs your pores and leads to acne and other skin blemishes, so using a carrier oil that closely mimics sebum has several major upsides. It balances oily skin and helps to tell your body that to stop producing sebum. This helps to reduce oily skin at its core.
Hemp Seed Oil
- light to dark green oil
- non-greasy
- rich with omegas 3, 6 and 9 and gamma linolenic acid (GLA)
- good for mature, combination, dry and damaged skin
- has firming, moisturizing, soothing, nourishing and anti-inflammatory qualities
Grapeseed OilÂ
- light green
- non-greasy oil
- rich in vitamin E as well as omega 6 and 9 fatty acids
- good for all skin types including combination, oily and acne prone skin
- has restorative, smoothing, antioxidant and restructuring qualities
Rice Bran Oil
- pale to golden colored oil
- non-greasy
- rich in vitamin E & omegas 6 and 9 fatty acids
- good for all skin types including mature, prematurely aged, dry and sensitive skin.
- has antioxidant, protective, nourishing, soothing, moisturizing and reparative qualities
Jojoba Oil
- pale yellow color
- non-greasy
- rich in vitamin E & omegas 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids
- good for all skin types including mature, prematurely aged, sensitive, oily, acne prone and problem skin
- has protective, moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, nourishing and balancing qualities
Sunflower Oil
- pale yellow color
- non-greasy
- rich in vitamin E & omegas 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids
- good for all skin types including sensitive, combination, acne and oily skin
- has softening, moisturizing, regenerative, conditioning and protective qualities
Sweet Almond Oil
- pale yellow color
- non-greasy
- rich in vitamin E and K & omegas 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids
- good for all skin types including sensitive, inflamed, psoriasis and eczema
- has emollient, softening, moisturizing, nourishing, restructuring, conditioning and soothing qualites
Which carrier oils are thicker, greasy and absorb slower?
Sometimes we need to add some thicker oils in order to facilitate a longer massage. Non-greasy fast-absorbing oils are great for short stroke massages but when longer strokes are needed or even when you don't want to keep adding more oil to the massage, a percentage oil may be the way to go which means it should only be used as a percentage of the total blend - max loads are included to avoid any unwanted side-effects.
Need Oil is actually a carrier oil but can be added to massage oil blends to create a thicker, longer lasting base. Neem oil is antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial and antiseptic.   Max load: 10-20% of total massage oil blend.
Olive Oil is a thick, vitamin E and K abundant carrier oil that also contains high amounts of omegas 6 and 9. It ahs a light to medium green color and can be used on all skin types but is best for dry and mature skin. Olive oil has nourishing, regenerating, moisturizing, protective and anti-inflammatory benefits for your skin.  Max load: 30-50% of total massage oil blend.
Avocado Oil is a thick, dark-green oil rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, D, and E. It is a deep-penetrating oil that is fantastic for sensitive, dehydrated or sunburned skin and is reputed to help reduce scars and fade aging spots. The best avocado oil for aromatherapy use is the darker, unrefined variations. Max load: 5-10% of total massage oil blend.
Evening Primrose is one of the more expensive oils on this list and is high in essential fatty acids (EFAs) and gamma linolenic acid (GLA). Evening Primrose is a soothing oil used to help prevent wrinkles and aid in the healing of acne, eczema, psoriasis and other skin inflammation conditions. Evening Primrose is also an antioxidant and can help counter free-radical damage and is most commonly used in smaller amounts in blends. Max load: 20% of total massage oil blend.

Which essential oils are best for CBD massage oil recipes?
Choosing the right essential oils for your massage oil is my favorite part. There are so many different oils with different effects and benefits that you can make one everyday and never have to use the same recipe. Peppermint, Lavender, Frankincense, Clary Sage, Chamomile, Rosemary Sweet Marjoram, Cinnamon, Bergamot.. the list truly goes on and on. So don't be afraid to be experimental, just make sure you are using oils that are safe for skin and within the safe dilution ranges.  Some oils can cause photosensitivity making your sensitive to sun and UV rays. Let's explore the best essential oils to use in massage oils.
Frankincense essential oil
- Frankincense has a sweet, slightly-woody, balsamic aroma that mixes well with many essential oils.
- Its helps to calm and ease the mind.
- Frankincense is known for its stress and pain relieving properties.
- Frankincense has the ability to prevent the production of molecules that cause inflammation and pain, especially for arthritis and other inflammatory
- ailments.
- For achy and sore muscles and joints, Frankincense is a true relieving powerhouse.
Lavender essential oil
- Smells wonderful with its calming floral aromas - aromatic relief is powerful and it is a medium note used in MANY massage oils.
- Lavender is a well known for its calming properties on the mind, but those effects extend well beyond the mind.
- Lavender helps to calm the muscles as well, soothing and easing away spasms and tension.
- Lavender has anti-aging properties so it is a superb oil to add to most massage oils for the skin care benefits - after all we are rubbing these oils all over our bodies when we get massages- might as well help your skin in the process!
Peppermint essential oil
- Peppermint has a warm, minty aroma that is a sweet addition to most pain relief topicals and oils.
- Peppermint has a cooling, soothing effect with its menthol-rich terpene blend.
- The impact on pain is fast and noticeable as it soothes and relieves.
Copaiba essential oil
- Copaiba has a woody, sweet, balsamic scent.
- Copaiba has anti-inflammation and pain relieving properties
Note: I love copaiba. I use it several times a week neat on my skin or orally to help with pain and inflammation during the day. Most essentials oils are too harsh for direct skin use but copaiba is one that I will use quite religiously.
Clary Sage essential oil
- Clary Sage smells wonderful!
- It has stress relieving and anti-depressant effects
Note: Adding Clary Sage is not necessarily for the pain relief but for the stress relief. A good massage not only will reduce the pain but leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, mentally and physically.
WHY USE ESSENTIAL OILS WITH INFUSED HEMP?
- CBD can help provide increased pain and inflammation relief
- CBD adds antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal protection
- CBD can help provide increased muscle relaxation
- CBD can help provide increased mental relaxation
Whether you are adding CBD infused essential oils to a pain relieving massage oil, a bath bomb or a diffuser, the increased benefits will make you wonder why you haven't tried them before. Believe me, they changed my life and allowed me to make numerous DIY creations that are much harder when you have to infuse your own CBD extract!
Those are just a few of my favorite oils to add to massage oils.
Which essential oils are best to avoid using in a massage oil?
Photosensitive oils
Lemon essential oil
Lime essential oil
Grapefruit essential oil
Bergamot essential oil
If you do use oils that are known to cause photosensitivity:
1. Wait approximately 12 hours after application before exposing skin to full sun.
2. If you have to go outside in the sun before the 12-hour period is up, use clothing to cover up any areas the essential oil was applied to.  if you must go out
3. Always be sure to read the entire label and list of ingredients of your skincare products and topical medications as many products contain oils that may cause a photosensitive reaction.
4. If you experience a reaction, discontinue use of the product go indoors. Bathe the affected area with a carrier oil or full-fat milk. Remember, oil and water do not mix, so using a nonpolar substance like milk or oil is the best way to wash off the essential oil. If the skin irritation worsens, contact your doctor immediately or call poison control at (800) 222-1222.
How much essential oil should I add?
Essential oils are highly concentrated and as a result need to be diluted in order to avoid an unwanted reaction on your skin. A good rule of thumb to avoid any issues is to keep around 2-3%, and even less for those with sensitive skin or sensitivities to essential oils - around 1%.
